Particle Solutionz has 8 years' experience in filtering honey – all types from creamed Manuka Clover blends to
liquid honey. The honey is processed through a nylon filter bag, inside a GAF filter housing, to remove foreign
particles prior to creaming. The second stage of filtration is "polishing" through a finer nylon or polypropylene filter bag to catch minute bits ofwax or particles which may have been suspended in the liquid.

The New Zealand Water and Waste Association is supporting the formation of a "Small Water Systems" Special Interest Group. The group will be responsible for ensuring quality control and proper training amongst the various groups, businesses and organisations involved in this area.

Managing Director Ivan Sisson says" We want to be there from the start, because it is vital that industries, private groups and companies involved in supplying or using public and private water are meeting the new standards. This is a major health issue for New Zealanders and we need to ensure effective self regulation and training is developed to comply before government and the Ministry of Health regulate for us."

About 28% of the New Zealand population is served by smaller municipal and private water supply systems, this includes commercial and private users of lesser size than require current registration and compliance. Over 13,000 dairy farms are being progressively required to meet the new water standards for cleaning milk contact surfaces, plus other rural farms and businesses such as horticulture, cropping, livestock and forestry. Many businesses in metropolitan areas may also find that their water supply is not up to the new standard.

Ivan Sisson says" These users want a reliable, efficient and secure system that is easy to use and maintain. Many existing installations will not comply, and have been installed by people with no formal training or qualifications. Any health risks or problems due to poor design, installation or maintainence create liability issues and the potential for government agency intervention."

Assured Performance for Filter Bags in Contact with Food.

Filter Bags are widely used for the filtration of fluids which are either directly or indirectly used as foodstuffs. In most applications, these types of filters must be carefully applied to ensure that no contamination to the foodstuffs results from their use. Most of the materials used to manufacture disposable filters (this includes bag filters and cartridge filters) are polymers, which are generally selected for their purity in the application. Many of these materials however, contain materials which can diffuse out of the plastic into the process fluid. This effect, know as migration, can lead to foodstuff contamination.

For this reason, in many areas, the use of plastics is limited to materials which have demonstrated safety by foodstuff regulations. Filtration components therefore, must satisfy the requirements of safety and these regulations in each application in direct contact with foodstuffs.

Bag Filtration Best Insurance for New Zealand Water Standard

New water supply standards being introduced in New Zealand require giardia and cryptosporidium to be removed. This will be a major issue for some businesses, as well as small private water suppliers.

Removal of giardia and cryptosporidium requires filtration to particles smaller than 5um. The physical barrier of filtration can provide up to 99.999% removal rate.

Pressurised forward flow is the operating principle behind Hayward liquid bag filtration. The vessel consists of three parts: the filter vessel, the restrainer basket, and the filter bag. The liquid to be filtered is fed into the top of the filter bag, which is supported by the restrainer basket. This allows the liquid to be distributed evenly over the total filtration surface, resulting in constant flow distribution over the medium with no negative effects of turbulence.

The liquid flows from the inside to the outside of the filter bag. The trapped particles remain inside the bag, allowing filter bag changeout to take place without contamination of the downstream fluid. The handles designed into GAF filter bags make bag replacement fast and easy.

The stainless steel wire mesh restrainer basket has a standard 1.4mm opening. This allows a large free surface area which exhibits the following characteristics:

-High flow rates
-Increased filter bag service life
-Even flow pattern for the equal distribution of contaminants over the filter medium
